The lecture, titled “The Role of Science and Technology in Achieving Global Food Security,” is open to the public. Beachy will discuss the future of sustainable and intensive agriculture, according to a news release.
The scientist’s work on plant genetic engineering, which led to the development of plants resistant to viral diseases, has earned him numerous honors and awards, including the Wolf Prize in Agriculture. From master ice carvers to steaming chili and snowman building, Elkhart County is filled with activities for the whole family to enjoy. Goshen is holding the city's 5th annual Fire and Ice Festival on Friday and Saturday. The Michiana Ice Carvers Association will be carving on Friday night from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. in front of downtown Goshen businesses. Saturday those carvers will put their skills to the test with a carving competition starting at 10:00 a.m. This year's mild temperatures have brought an added challenge for the sculptors. “It’s going to be tough to keep the ice sculptures looking nice,” Ice carving coordinator Greg Beachey said. “We’re having a little bit of trouble with the weather, sunshine and the wind. But we’re adapting the way we sculpt the pieces to make them last.” The annual Chili Fire Competition takes place on Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Awards will be presented at 2:00 p.m. at the Goshen Theatre. Fire damages NM service house ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. Everyone is safe.
All of the participants were at work when the fire ignited, sometime between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. A neighbor called the fire department upon seeing the flames. “Everything will need to be pitched or cleaned up,” said Carolyn Snyder, the Service Adventure support committee chair and a member at Albuquerque Mennonite Church. On the cold, rainy day after the fire, the participants stayed away from work, waiting to get into the house to retrieve what they could. Sitting in the same clothes from the day before, they ate sandwiches, salad and Oreo cookies donated by church members.

Service Adventure gives young adults ages 17-20 the opportunity to live and serve in community with other young adults and a mentor or mentor couple. Albuquerque participants are Melanie Pilz, 19, from Rangsdorf, Germany; Erin Regier, 18, from Newton, Kan.; Hannah Martin, 18, from Greencastle, Pa.; and Michelle Peachey, 18, from Lancaster, Pa. Amory shook up history in Tampa
Thousands of people pass by the Fort Homer Hesterly Armory every day. However, few have any idea of the history that resides within the walls of the building that sits unoccupied and largely unnoticed along Howard Avenue in West Tampa. The Armory sits atop a site that is historic in and of itself. During the summer of 1898, Theodore Roosevelt's Rough Riders used the open land as their campsite in the days leading up to the Spanish-American War.

The space later came to be known as Benjamin Field, named for George Benjamin, one of the founders of West Tampa. Benjamin donated the land to the city of West Tampa in 1896 for use as a park. In the early 1910s, Benjamin Field became an airfield. Aviation was still in its infancy, and pioneering pilots like LINCOLN BEACHEY participated in several air meets at the field — and accomplished one of the first night flights in aviation history at that site. She said checking heads at the station is voluntary for hunters. Most of the time, Beachy said, the age of the deer is recorded and a collectible patch is given out. The agents check a deer’s age by slicing open a side of the animal’s cheek, necessary after rigor mortis. Jaelin Beachy of Staples-Motley maintained the place she attained in the 100 breaststroke prelims as she cruised to a sixth-place finish in the finals at 1:08.43 to earn all-state honors.
Beachy went 1:07.9 in the prelims, which shattered her previous school record. “Going into the race I was already in the top eight,” Beachy said. “This was really a big accomplishment for me. I was tied for sixth going in (to the finals), and I’m excited that I maintained that. “It was just exciting because I didn’t expect to make top eight. It was a big goal to accomplish.”

DETROIT LAKES — Staples-Motley sophomore Jaelin Beachy won the 50-yard freestyle and finished second in the breaststroke during Saturday’s Section 8-1A meet. Former Hesston College President Laban Peachey (1968-80) and President Howard Keim pose with the Hesston College airplane named in honor of President Peachey during Homecoming Weekend 2011. Peachey was President when the aviation program was launched in 1970 and was a major advocate of the program from its inception. But the plan for aviation seemed unprecedented. How could a small Christian college support an Aviation program? “We had no planes and no facilities; just a lot of interest and enthusiastic students,” said Peachey. During its first year of existence, the program leased an airplane from the Moundridge (Kan.) Flying Club, used the McPherson (Kan.) airport as its base and offered two courses – one ground training course and one flight training course. Director of Aviation Dan Miller, a 1978 graduate of Hesston’s program and Director since 1999, said fall 2011 enrollment boasts 45 students in the aviation program, including 12 studying Air Traffic Control, which was introduced at Hesston in 2009 and in 2010 became one of 36 colleges across the country and the only Kansas college to gain FAA approval. Laura Beachy grew up in Somerset, Pa., seven miles from Shanksville, where United Airlines Flight 93 crashed. When her sixth-grade teacher turned on the television, Beachy, then 11, couldn’t believe the images were real. Her teacher broke down, evidence that they were. She remembers the early days, when people in Somerset County opened their homes, cooked dinners and held candles for the families of Flight 93. The Keio Medical Science Prize from Keio University in Tokyo, Japan has been awarded to Howard Hughes Medical Institute investigator Philip A. Beachy of Stanford University School of Medicine and Keiji Tanaka of Tokyo Metropolitan Institute of Medical Science.
Beachy is receiving the prize in recognition of his identification of Hedgehog, a key molecule in development, and its medical applications. Tanaka was selected for his discovery of the proteasome and elucidation of its physiological functions.

Schlabach and his five-year-old son, John, were thrown from the buggy.

According to Jay Peachey of Belleville PA, a bull rider competing in the Memorial Day Rodeo at Wellsville Frontier Days club grounds on Monday, it all comes down to eight seconds. That's the amount of time that a bull rider must stay on the animal in order to get a score. Judges assign scores to the riders based not on the amount of time they stay mounted, but according to how much control they assert and how much the bull bucks. Peachey, of Belleville, spends his weekdays pouring concrete foundations for a living. But on weekends, Peachey spends his time traveling to any rodeos he can get to in the region. Peachey would be hard-pressed to say why exactly he wanted to get into bull riding in the first place. But wherever the urge came from, it led him to a school in Texas where he learned the skill. The pool bed was poured in 1929, which makes village officials feel they got their money's worth without having to perform major structural repairs for more than 80 years. The saga of the trolley goes back several years, when Daugherty and Beachy made a trip to Mount Hope to look at carriages that were going to be soldthe the next day at the Mt. Hope Auction.
“I liked this one because it was low and loaded from the right side,” said Daugherty, owner of Collectors Decanters and Steins, a store in Sugarcreek. “I couldn’t attend the sale so I told Dave if it sold for under $2,000 I would purchase it.” Daugherty said his interest in the trolley was to promote tourism in Sugarcreek. Luck was on his side.
When Beachy, owner of Beachy’s Country Chalet restaurant in Sugarcreek, got to the sale, the trolley was being taken out of the sale ring. When he learned it had not sold, Beachy offered the owner $1,750 the trolley, and the offer was accepted.
“We brought the trolley to Sugarcreek, painted it, put carpet on the floor and added advertisers signs,” Daugherty said. Two two red Belgian horses are lesed from Leroy Stutzman to pull the trolley. Every year, 35 Syracuse University students are named Remembrance Scholars and are awarded $5,000 scholarships for their academic achievement, citizenship and service to the community
When LAURA BEACHY visited Syracuse University as a senior in high school, she knew she wanted to be a part of the Remembrance Scholars. "My dad and I both knew that it was something I was looking to apply to," said Beachy, who visited during SU's Remembrance Week in 2006. Beachy and 34 other students entering their senior year of college were announced as Remembrance Scholars on Monday. SU officials established the scholars to honor the 35 students who were killed during the Dec. 21, 1988, Pan Am Flight 103 bombing in Lockerbie, Scotland. Beachy, a television, radio and film and anthropology major, said she has seen the firsthand effects of terrorism. "It's just something I have lived with and been very close to," said Beachy, who is from Somerset County, Pa., where Flight 93 went down on 9/11. After seeing the families and friends that were affected by the tragedy, she said she felt as if she could relate to the purpose of the Remembrance Scholars and felt it was her obligation to apply. Aurora Oregon, On Thursday, Beachy took the mound for the Huskies and led the Huskies to their second straight win and “did what he’s been doing all year,” said Brack. Beachy went the distance, scattering seven hits, allowing two earned runs, while striking out seven and walking just one. “He keeps hitters off-balance, gets a lot of ground balls and fly balls and usually doesn’t strike out very many guys,” said Brack. “I think that was his high strikeout total of the year.”
“He just hung in there and does a really good job,” Brack said. Beachy’s submarine-style delivery gives him somewhat of an advantage, said Brack, because opposing hitters don’t typically have much experience with that kind of arm angle.
“He doesn’t throw real hard, and usually (submarine-style pitchers) don’t throw real hard. They just get guys out. Everybody plays with a lot of confidence behind him because they know he’s going to throw strikes and they’re going to get chances to make plays. The Beachy Amish are an Anabaptist church which formed in 1927 in Pennsylvania. The Beachy Amish church is also known as the Beachy Amish Mennonite Fellowship, reflecting Mennonite influences. Some argue that the Beachy Amish are more rightly described as a Mennonite group. Beachy Amish have founded missions around the world, hold services in church buildings, and Sunday Schools to name a few things. In A History of the Amish, Amish historian Steven M. Nolt explains that the Beachy Amish movement emerged in the Old Order Amish community on the southern border of Somerset County, Pennsylvania over three decades. WASHINGTON, March 28, 2011 – USDA’s National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA), today announced a grant to Virginia Tech to address global food security concerns though improved soybean production.

“Agriculture faces a serious challenge as it strives to produce food for a global population expected to reach 9 billion by 2050,” said ROGER BEACHY, NIFA director. “Today soybeans are the largest source of protein and the second largest source of vegetable oil in the world, so improving soybean production has important implications for food security. NIFA is working to increase food production while minimizing losses from disease, harvest, transport and storage.”

Dave Beachy President Amish Heritage Foundation

SUGARCREEK —Thanks to the efforts of the Amish Heritage Foundation, one of the oldest, possibly the oldest, house in Sugarcreek, has been restored to the way it would have looked in 1869, the year it was built.
The John S. Yoder House now is a tourist attraction, and will open for the season May 6. The season will run through Oct. 29.
Yoder, the original owner of the house, and his wife Franey raised their eight children, Barbara, Magdalena, Isaac, Sarah, Benjamin, Mary Ann, Drusilla and Rebecca in the house.
It took Applecreek Movers and a six horse hitch of Belgians to move the 92-ton house from its original location near the Sugarcreek fire station in 1995. Beachy is the senior author of the research, published online March 9 in Nature. He is the Ernest and Amelia Gallo Professor at the medical school and a member of the Stanford Cancer Center and the Stanford Institute for Stem Cell Biology and Regenerative Medicine. Larry L. Beachy, a retired dentist, served on the parks boards in Elkhart County and Goshen, Ind., for a combined 30 years before moving to Stuart. I was asked to form a committee to investigate and research all types of bicycle trails. We built wide sidewalk trails to every school in our city limits, every park and government building, and every hospital and library in our city. These wide sidewalk trails are used by hundreds of people daily. We also built 13 miles of trails on an abandoned railroad. Eight miles of trails were built along a river. These long-distance trails connect to other cities where long-distance riders and walkers share willing not only the trail, but also the wildlife and surroundings. I can happily report that we have never had a death on an off road trail. I am 75 now and will continue to ride my bike on the sidewalk. I will be considerate and kind to every walker I approach or pass. I will thank them for allowing me to pass because that is way a grateful American treats his neighbor.

PONTIAC —They watched another team celebrate at the final buzzer, receive a supersectional plaque and cut down the nets. Then Evan Massey huddled his Galesburg High School girls basketball team together after their 77-70 Class 3A Pontiac Supersectional loss to County Club Hills Hillcrest on Monday and directed them to the throng of Silver Streaks fans in the east bleachers at Crowley Gymnasium.
The 17 girls who somehow made it this far walked over and clapped for the hundreds who drove nearly two hours to watch them. “It’s not about us,” senior point guard Tai Peachey said. “It’s about everyone in Galesburg and working hard being a team. It’s a big deal.”

Stanford discoveries offer first new hope in three decades for lethal pediatric brain tumor. "So little is known about this disease," said Philip Beachy, PhD, professor of developmental biology and senior author of the study. "This work has the potential of moving us a huge step forward."
A pediatric brain tumor that causes gruesome suffering is finally yielding its secrets. For the first time, scientists at the Stanford University School of Medicine have cultured human cells from this cancer, Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma, and used those cells to create an animal model of the disease. Their discoveries will facilitate research on new treatments for DIPG, a tumor of school-aged children that is now almost universally fatal. The advances come thanks to the parents of young cancer victims, who donated their deceased children's brain tumors for research in the hopes of sparing other families the pain they had experienced. Because of its location in the brain stem, this cancer is rarely biopsied, so scientists have had few previous opportunities to examine the tumors. The director of USDA’s National Institute of Food and Agriculture, Roger Beachy was in St. Louis recently visiting the Old North co-op and discussing the issue of nutrition.
Here in St. Louis, the Old North Grocery Co-op opened last summer, in an effort to increase healthy food options in an underserved part of the city. It’s the first co-op in Missouri to serve a predominantly low-income neighborhood. Beachy says many communities don’t have public transportation, and without it, people are stuck with whatever food is available in walking distance – usually, a less healthy selection than most parents would like for their children.
