Part one, The Clarkesville Victory

On May 7, 1945, Germany surrendered to the Allies, and WWII was over in Europe. Many of Poland's citizens were still starving and homeless. The United Brethren Missionary Society assisted by restocking the Polish farms with horses and cattle so that farming operations could again begin. Thrity two farmers from across America were chosen to handle and care for over 700 horses on a journey to Poland. They were nicknamed the "Cowboys" Robert Callin and Eli Beachy were two of the men chosen to accompany the horses.
The ship "The Clarksville Victory", was loaded with 744 horses, 258 tons of hay 32 tons of oats and bran. They arrived in Poland Dec. 27, 1945. The country was in horrible condition due to the war. Fifty six horses died on the voyage. Google search "The Clarksville Victory" to read Bob Callin's diary of the journey. What a journey it was! (part two below) Posted by Picasa

Part two "Clarkville Reunion"

On July 15, 1976, Bob Callin hosted a "Clarkville Reunion" a reunion party of 32 men who took part in the trip to Poland back in 1946. This photo was taken of the remaining "Cowboys" who came to the reunion and reflexed on the amazing trip 30 years ago. (Eli Beachy backrow left side) Way to go guys! Posted by Picasa
