Brandon Beachy, Atlanta Braves

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. — Atlanta fans know the Brandon Beachy story. The rest of the baseball world may know it soon enough.
The Braves right-hander Beachy may go from being someone no Braves fan had heard of two years ago, to being the anchor of this year’s staff. He made his first major league start in a mid-September game in Philadelphia during the 2010 pennant run.
He was replacing Braves starter Jair Jurrgens back then. Now the 25-year-old Beachy needs to step up again with Tim Hudson sidelined until May with a back injury, and Tommy Hanson and Jurrjens battling minor injuries. Longevity will be a key for Beachy this season. Click for article by Associated Press, Published: February 28, 2012.

Dr. Roger Beachy Biotech’s papa

A Conversation With Roger Beachy, President Emeritus of the Donald Danforth Plant Science Center. Biotech’s papa. BY JEANNETTE COOPERMAN, March 2012. Click here to read a great article.
In 100 years, how will people look back on the past quarter-century?
As a key step to global food security and sustainable intensification of agriculture. Some people think agriculture, to be sustainable, has to be small. It can’t be small and feed 10 billion people. Genetically enhanced crops are helping to build soil quality while increasing yields. Virus-resistant cassava, a subsistence crop, is being field-trialed in Uganda, Nigeria, and Kenya. If we are successful, their food security will have been helped by the Danforth Center.

Laura Beachy

Laura Beachy, 21, had her life change on the first anniversary of Sept. 11, 2001, when she was allowed to get into a Fox News Channel van.
The summer before she had met the same crew at the Quecreek Mine rescue — which included Emmy award-winner Jeff Goldblatt — and stayed in touch because she was fascinated by the process.
"My mom drove me down to the (temporary memorial at the crash site of United Flight 93 in Stonycreek Township)(PA) and I got to help with the camera and got to do interviews. I told myself then I was going to be a reporter," she said.
The Somerset native was 12 at the time. "It was an amazing experience and I just can't believe it happened," she said. Click to read the article in the Daily American on Line by Dan Dipaolo Daily American Sunday Editor February 25, 2012
