Greg Beachey Ice Carving Coordinator

Goshen Ind.With the mild weather this weekend, it's the perfect time to get everyone together and enjoy some outdoor winter fun. From master ice carvers to steaming chili and snowman building, Elkhart County is filled with activities for the whole family to enjoy. Goshen is holding the city's 5th annual Fire and Ice Festival on Friday and Saturday. The Michiana Ice Carvers Association will be carving on Friday night from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. in front of downtown Goshen businesses. Saturday those carvers will put their skills to the test with a carving competition starting at 10:00 a.m. This year's mild temperatures have brought an added challenge for the sculptors. “It’s going to be tough to keep the ice sculptures looking nice,” Ice carving coordinator Greg Beachey said. “We’re having a little bit of trouble with the weather, sunshine and the wind. But we’re adapting the way we sculpt the pieces to make them last.” The annual Chili Fire Competition takes place on Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Awards will be presented at 2:00 p.m. at the Goshen Theatre.
